NEW MARKET, MARYLAND

New Market is a town in Frederick County, Maryland.  New Market is known as the “Antique” capital of Maryland.

HISTORY

When Frederick, Maryland settlers began settling in 1745, trade routes developed between Frederick and Baltimore.  New Market developed with this road and became known as the National Road and the Gateway to the West.  In 1792, lots had begun to be laid out initiating the beginning of the town of New Market.  New Market then became an important stopping point along the route from Frederick to Baltimore, MD.

ATTRACTIONS/TOURISM

Downtown New Market is lined with numerous small shops specializing in the sale of antiques and other goods.  Tourism occurs year round and they hold two annual festivals highlighting the town’s historic past.  “A Day in New Market” festival is held annually on the first Saturday in May.  “Christmas in New Market” is held on the first Saturday in December every year as well.  These festivals celebrate the traditional life of 18th and 19th-century residents.  From June through October every year, New Market holds monthly events on the 2nd Saturday, including artists, food vendors, free concerts, and movies.
